It’s Always The One’s You Least Suspect (part 2)

July 25 2024

A few months after my awkward interaction with Brodie, was the biggest annual event for any hospitality worker in Australia. Good Friday!

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. Why is Good Friday a noteworthy day.

For those of you who don’t work in a big pub that is open 363 days of the year, it’s one of about only 2 days the pub is ACTUALLY closed. And the staff parties are absolutely insane!

Young broke staff, all the free alcohol you can consume and we start at noon!

Things WILL get out of hand, which is usually why management bails after about 2 drinks. Thank god we didn’t have HR.

So the drinks are flowing, the tunes are pumping. There is an exciting energy to afternoon. It came just after the 3 bosses left. It was kinda like being a teenager and you knew your parents were out for the night. That feeling of freedom, that sense that anything can happen. The illusion of no consequence.

It was in the middle of teaching our fresh 18yo staff members how to play beer pong that she caught my eye.

Standing off to the side, drink in hand, dress as conservatively as grandma at Sunday church. Brodie was standing against the wall, simply observing the chaos unfolding.

But there was something different about her, an energy. I felt the instant we locked eyes.

She simply made eye contact, turned and walked down the hall to the bathrooms.

I don’t know what possessed me to follow her.

Up until this point I thought she couldn’t stand me. Maybe she still can’t stand me. But I followed anyway out of sheer curiosity.

I walked down the hall and as the yells off the party fell into the distance I notice the door to one of the bathrooms had been left open just a few inches.

I slowly approach, and as I put my hand on the door and gently pushed it open I saw her.

Sitting on the toilet, pink frilly underwear around her ankles.

For a moment I was shocked and looked away. Saying “sorry! I didn’t know anyone was in here”

She said nothing.

I looked back at her, as I went to close the door.

But just before I did, our eyes locked again. This time it was unmistakable. Her seductive gaze stopped me in my tracks.

The first words Brodie ever spoke to me were.

“Well…are you just going to stand there all day?”

To be continued in part 3…
